If you are getting a new website built, you will run into two very different approaches: a headless, code-based website, or a CMS or template-based website like WordPress, Wix or Squarespace. The names get thrown around a lot without much explanation, so here is a plain-English breakdown of what each one actually is, how they stack up against each other, and how to think about which one fits your business.
A headless website is built entirely from code, from the ground up, specifically for your business. There is no separate content management system sitting behind it, no dashboard you log into to edit pages, no theme or plugin library. It is just clean, purpose-built code doing exactly what your site needs and nothing else. That is the "headless" part, there is no separate back end for managing content the way a traditional CMS has one. Every page is written directly in code by whoever builds it, which sounds technical, but in practice it simply means the site only carries what it actually needs to work, and nothing that was bundled in by default, which is the whole idea behind proper website development.
A CMS, or content management system, is software like WordPress that sits behind your website and lets you log in to a dashboard to edit pages, add blog posts and swap out photos, usually built on a pre-made template or theme. Wix and Squarespace work on the same basic idea. The appeal is obvious: you get a back end you can use yourself. The trade-off is that the site is built on someone else's foundations rather than yours, and it usually relies on a stack of plugins to do anything beyond the basics. This is the most common approach for blogs, hobby sites and businesses that want to make frequent, small edits themselves without calling anyone.
| What matters | Headless (code-based) | CMS & templates |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to build | Cheaper | More expensive once it is all added up |
| Time to deliver | Faster | Longer to build out properly |
| Security | Fewer vulnerabilities | More exposed, especially through plugins |
| Site speed | Fast, lightweight code | Slower, weighed down by themes and plugins |
| SEO & AI search | Built for how search engines and AI tools read a site | Can work, but bloat often holds it back |
| Editing content yourself | No separate back end | Has a back end, though it can be tricky without experience |
Laid out like that, the pattern is fairly clear. Headless wins on cost, speed, security and search visibility. A CMS or template wins on one specific thing: having a dashboard you can log into and edit yourself. Everything comes down to how much that one feature is worth to you, weighed against everything else on the other side of the table.
Once the two are laid out side by side, headless comes out ahead on most of what actually matters day to day.
Templates and CMS platforms carry the promise of being quick and easy, but the reality has some real downsides.
That last point is worth sitting with. Having a back end for content edits is the main advantage a CMS holds over headless, but it only pays off if you are actually comfortable using it. For a lot of small business owners, that dashboard becomes another thing to wrestle with rather than the time-saver it was sold as.
To be even-handed about it, headless is not without its own trade-off. Because there is no separate CMS behind a headless site, there is no back end for you to log into and edit content yourself. Any changes to text, photos or pages go through whoever built the site rather than a dashboard on your end. For businesses that rarely change their content, that is barely noticeable. For businesses that want to make frequent small edits themselves, it is a genuine factor worth thinking about before you choose.
Headless is not a niche or experimental approach any more, it is simply the more modern way to build a website, and it is what we build every website on. If you want a site that is quicker to deliver, cheaper to build, more secure and set up to perform well in both Google search and AI search tools, our website design and website development teams build exactly that, and we handle any updates for you so you are never left wrestling with a dashboard. Between the two of us, you get the speed, cost and security benefits of headless without having to become a developer yourself to keep the site running.
