Why your local business needs a Google Business Profile

Why your local business needs a Google Business Profile

If you run a local business, there is a good chance you have seen a Google Business Profile without realising that is what it was called: the box on the right of a Google search with a business's hours, phone number, photos and reviews, or one of the three listings that show up under a map when you search for something nearby. Here is what a Google Business Profile actually is, how the map pack and "near me" results work, and why it matters so much for a local business.

What is a Google Business Profile?

A Google Business Profile is a free listing for your business that you set up and manage directly with Google. It holds the core facts about your business: your name, address and phone number, your opening hours, the categories that describe what you do, your website link, photos, and a running feed of customer reviews. Once it is verified, that profile is what Google pulls from to show your business in two places: regular Google Search results, and Google Maps. Nothing about setting one up costs money, and there is no requirement to already have a website, though the two work best together.

What is the "map pack"?

When you search for something like "cafe Beaudesert" or "plumber near me", Google usually shows a small map near the top of the results with three business listings underneath it. That is the map pack, sometimes called the local pack, and it is some of the most valuable space in the entire search results page. It sits above almost every normal website listing, complete with each business's rating, review count, opening hours and a one-tap call or directions button. Businesses in the map pack get seen first, and they get seen with far more information attached than a plain blue link ever shows. On a phone, which is how most local searches now happen, the map pack is often the very first thing someone sees before they even scroll, well ahead of any organic website listing beneath it.

What are "near me" searches?

"Near me" searches are exactly what they sound like: someone typing "electrician near me" or "cafe open now near me" rather than naming a specific suburb. These searches have become one of the most common ways people look for a local business, especially on a phone, because Google already knows roughly where that phone is. Google matches the search to businesses nearby and ranks them using signals from their Google Business Profile, not from typing the correct town name into a search box. A business does not need the words "near me" anywhere on its website to appear in these results. It needs an accurate, well-managed profile that tells Google exactly where it is and what it does. This is a genuine shift from how search used to work, where matching the exact words someone typed used to matter most. Now, being the closest, most relevant, most trustworthy option nearby can matter just as much as anything written on the page itself.

Why this matters so much for a local business

Between the map pack and "near me" searches, a huge share of local customers are found through a Google Business Profile before they ever land on an actual website. A few reasons this matters more than almost anything else in a small business's online presence:

  • It is completely free to set up and maintain, unlike running paid ads for the same visibility.
  • It shows up right when someone is ready to act, searching for exactly what you do, nearby, often right now.
  • It carries trust signals, reviews, photos and ratings, that a plain website cannot show at a glance in the search results themselves.
  • It levels the playing field. A well-run local profile can outrank a much bigger competitor who has neglected theirs.

This is why a Google Business Profile is treated as one of the foundational pieces of any proper local SEO strategy, not an optional extra bolted on afterwards.

What makes a profile perform well

Google weighs a Google Business Profile against three broad things: how relevant it is to what someone searched for, how close the business is to the person searching, and how prominent or trustworthy the business appears based on its reviews, information and general reputation online. A profile that is fully filled out, accurate and genuinely active tends to perform far better across all three than one that was claimed once and left untouched. Reviews play into that prominence factor more than most business owners realise, both how many you have and how recently they were left.

That means the businesses winning the map pack are usually not the biggest ones, they are the ones who picked the right categories, keep their hours correct, add photos regularly, and reply to reviews instead of ignoring them. Getting all of that right consistently is exactly the kind of ongoing work our SEO service handles for local businesses.

A profile is not "set and forget"

A Google Business Profile is not something you fill in once and leave alone. Google notices activity. Businesses that post the odd update, add fresh photos, answer questions and respond to reviews, both good and bad, tend to be treated as more trustworthy than ones that have been silent for a year. It costs nothing but a little time, and it is one of the few parts of local SEO a business owner can genuinely manage themselves. Even ten minutes a fortnight, replying to a review or adding a recent photo, is enough to keep a profile looking active rather than abandoned.

Setting up and properly optimising a Google Business Profile is exactly the kind of groundwork our SEO service takes care of for local businesses across the Scenic Rim, so it keeps working in the background instead of sitting half-finished.
